Septic Smart Week: EPA, 9/18 - 9/22

We're excited to share that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is hosting its annual Septic Smart Week this year from September 18th to 22nd. Here at Wind River Environmental, we can’t stress enough the importance of maintaining a healthy septic system. Septic Smart Week is an annual initiative aimed at informing homeowners and communities about the proper care and maintenance of their septic systems.

Why Septic Smart Week Matters

Septic systems serve over 26 million American homes, and yet many people lack basic awareness of how to maintain them properly. Neglected septic systems can fail and lead to costly repairs, not to mention potential health hazards and polluted local waterways. Through Septic Smart Week, the EPA aims to rectify this lack of awareness with information dissemination and community involvement.

Septic Smart Tips from the EPA

Throughout the week, the EPA will be sharing valuable information and practical tips to help you maintain your septic system. Some key points to remember are:

  1. Inspect Annually, Pump Regularly: Experts recommend getting your septic system inspected at least every three years by a licensed contractor and having the tank pumped when necessary, generally every three to five years.

  2. Be Mindful of What Goes Down the Drain: Don't dispose of household items like oils, grease, and non-biodegradable soaps in your drains as they can clog your septic system.

  3. Conserve Water: Reducing water use helps in minimizing the wastewater that goes into the septic system, making it easier for the system to treat it.

  4. Keep It Clean: Contaminants from a failing septic system can pollute nearby rivers and streams, which is harmful to both human health and the environment.

  5. Plan Landscaping Wisely: Plant only grass over and near your septic system to avoid damage from roots. Don’t drive or park heavy vehicles on the drain field.

Septic Smart Week is an excellent reminder that a small change in your routine can have a significant impact on the longevity of your septic system and the health of your community. Let's all become more septic smart, not just for a week but all year long!
