Believe it or not, many areas don’t have soil which is suitable for a typical septic system. In those situations, an alternative system is needed. Alternative systems are also necessary (sometimes) if there are too many septic systems in the same area or the systems are too close to groundwater or surface waters.
There are all kinds of alternative systems. Many use sand, peat or plastic media – instead of soil – to promote wastewater treatment. Other systems might use wetlands, lagoons, aerators or disinfection devices. In each of these, float switches, pumps and other electrical or mechanical components may also come into play.
As you might guess, all this new technology needs extra care and maintenance and alternative systems should be inspected annually. Check with your local health department or give us a call for more about these!
