What is compost?
Compost is the by-product of a controlled decomposition process of organic material. It is a soil-like product that is high in nutrients and can hold water. It is also full of microbial life that is essential for healthy, productive soil.
How does Earth Farms, A Wind River Company make its compost?
Earth Farms, A Wind River Company uses the open windrow composting method. For a more complete description, check out our How We Do It page.
Isn’t compost just old cow or pig manure?
No, not quite!
We follow a state-regulated composting procedure. We use a specific blend of carbon sources (wood chips and cotton dust) and nitrogen sources (food waste) to reach high enough temperatures to kill pathogens and weed seeds.
What can organic compost do for my soil?
Organic compost offers a wide range of benefits that work together to create healthier, more productive soil. Whether you're improving a lawn, garden bed, or large landscape, our products can help.
Compost enhances the natural properties of your soil in several important ways:
Improve soil structure by increasing porosity and decreasing density to encourage a healthy root environment.
Increase water retention to allow for more efficient watering (maybe irrigation).
Help prevent erosion.
Improve the soil's ability to hold nutrients by stabilizing pH.
Reintroduce and encourage microbial life by adding necessary micro- and macronutrients.
Together, these benefits help create a stronger foundation for plant growth, resulting in healthier, more resilient lawns and gardens. Adding compost regularly can support long-term soil health and improve the overall success of your landscape.
