Turning a Problem Into a Sustainable Solution
The idea for Earth Farms Organics began after more than 35 years of servicing homes and businesses throughout the Charlotte area. Jim Lanier, owner of Stanley Environmental Solutions, was faced with a growing dilemma—what to do with the food waste removed from restaurant grease traps. At the time, the industry standard was to send this material straight to the landfill. While common, this approach wasted nutrient-rich organic matter that could be returned to the soil.
Unwilling to accept landfill disposal as the only option, Jim began researching alternatives. After extensive discussions with state regulators and careful planning, he identified composting as a responsible, environmentally sound solution. What began as a challenge quickly became an opportunity to support sustainability, soil health, and waste diversion across the region.
Built From the Ground Up in North Carolina
In 2006, Earth Farms Organics was officially founded on 100 acres in Dallas, North Carolina—with little more than a tractor, a skid steer, and a commitment to doing things differently. Through word of mouth and active involvement in the local sustainability movement, the operation steadily grew.

At Earth Farms Organics, our compost is created through a carefully managed, five-month process designed to meet and exceed state standards. We begin by collecting organic material from across the Charlotte area, thoroughly testing and balancing it to achieve the ideal mix of nitrogen and carbon. The material is then formed into windrows, where natural microorganisms generate sustained high heat—over 131°F—to eliminate pathogens and weed seeds. As a permitted North Carolina Type III Composting Facility, we follow strict procedures, undergo regular inspections, and test our compost quarterly to ensure safety, stability, and consistency.
