When is Septic System Repair Needed?

December 1, 2020

It can be difficult to determine when septic system repair is needed or if there’s just a simple clog. If you’ve been keeping up with preventative maintenance such as regular pumping, great. You’ve already taken some necessary steps against major septic problems. However, unforeseen issues can and do arise. You can always call Wind River Environmental to check, but here are some things you can do on your own to see if septic system repair is needed.

Slow Draining

If your sink or bathtub is taking much longer than usual to drain water, there’s usually an issue there. Sometimes this can simply be a clogged drain and the solution is much less stressful than needing repairs. However, a clogged drain is a best case scenario. If you suspect a clog, you can always contact us to clean your drain.

Unfortunately, this can also be a sign of some damage to your system. If snaking or jetting the drain doesn’t solve the issue, it’s time to investigate further. Whether or not there’s damage leading to slow draining, it’s best to call Wind River Environmental to assess the problem.

Abnormal Behavior Around the Septic Tank/Drainfield

Sometimes issues with your system can manifest around your tank and drainfield. The area around your tank and drainfield can tell you a lot about the health of your system. If you notice any patch of grass that looks spongy or is a lot brighter than the rest of your lawn, this could signal an issue with your drainfield. In addition to causing drainage issues and weird smells, failing drainfields can lead to costly repairs and sewage backup.

Other common signs from the outside of your drainfield include large puddles of water forming and strange smells coming from the area your dranfield is located.

Backup

Depending on the severity, this could be a warning sign or the system may have already failed. There are numerous reasons for backup including built up sludge, clogged pipes, a lack of bacteria due to chemicals, or sometimes even tree roots interfering with the septic system. In addition to being unpleasant, the extra water from your toilet, shower, or drains can cause water damage to your home. If you’ve noticed water backup, it’s best to contact Wind River Environmental to check on the situation and prevent future issues or unnecessary messes.
