What’s the Big Deal About Sludge?

If you could see inside your septic tank, there would essentially be 3 layers of sewage. The top layer would be scum, the middle would be effluent, and the heavy stuff at the bottom would be sludge. Anything denser than effluent (waste, toilet paper, skin cells, etc) makes up the sludge layer. Eventually, this sludge builds up and must be removed using hy vac trucks.

However, this is not the only type of sludge. You’ve also got alum sludge which is a waste product produced at water treatment plants due to the use of aluminum sulfate. It’s usually kept in large alum lagoons or is spread on drying beds. To remove alum sludge, we use high-tech lagoon pumps that can handle up to 500,000 gallons.  We also have a cable dredge capable of handling million-gallon projects. Then there’s the not so appetizing dry cake sludge which is basically waste from sewer plants that has had all the water and fluid extracted from it. Because of its tendency to be hard and sticky, it’s pretty difficult to remove.
