It is a reality of life that fat, oil and grease end up in the plumbing system. No matter how hard you try, fat, oil and grease (FOG) make their way off the plates and into the drain. FOG is one of the main reasons drains become clogged and sewage overflows. To try to lessen the impact of FOG, restaurants and other facilities with food service must have a grease interceptor or grease trap. The function of this trap is to catch the FOG and separate it from the water. If it does its job properly, then it helps prevent clogs and sewage overflows.
Many grease traps are made of metal. However, this is not the best material for a grease interceptor. When the FOG begins to break down, it becomes very acidic. It can be as acidic as stomach acid, which is about 1-2 pH. This corrosive material can quickly make an impact on metal. Additionally, the effluent that enters a grease trap often contains other strong chemicals like bleach or cleaning chemicals. These immediately begin to corrode a metal grease trap. Corrosion can be detrimental because minimally it can result in odors as seals are corrupted or at the very worst it can cause leaks. The escape of odors can attract pests like rodents, flies, or cockroaches.
So what’s the answer? First, if you have a functioning grease trap, make sure that it is regularly cleaned, maintained and serviced. This will help to extend its life and make sure that it is preventing sewage overflows. Wind River Environmental is the expert who can help ensure that your grease trap is functioning to the best of its ability.
Not only does Wind River Environmental service grease interceptors, but they also can help you replace a metal grease trap which is leaking with a model that can withstand the impact of FOG. For more information, please contact us today!
