Fishkill, New York, a small village located in the southwestern part of Dutchess County. As of the 2017 census, the population of the town was 2,119 spread out over the 32 square miles of land within the town. Many people question the name with one resident saying “it’s a friendly place that doesn’t want to kill fish”. The name Fishkill is derived from the two Dutch words “vis” meaning fish, and “kil” which means stream or creek. According to the Village of Fishkill website, In 1714 Dutch immigrants chose the area to settle and prosper.
During the Revolutionary War, the Village of Fishkill held one of the largest Colonial military encampments. Splashdown Beach calls itself “America’s biggest little water park” that draws visitors from all over the region to cool off in this beautiful section of New York. Summer in Fishkill also offers a youth summer camp, Camp Moriah, named in honor of Mariah Carey who serves as a Board member of the camp. For three and a half weeks each summer, the camp offers students from 7th to 9th grade classes like film and photography, culinary arts, debate and international relations.
Along with the exciting attractions, Dutchess County houses some of the Hudson Highlands, filled with state parks and natural beauty. The Village of Fishkill is home to the highest point in the Hudson Highlands, Beacon Mountain. The peak of the mountain sits at nearly 1600’ along Fishkill Ridge and draws thousands of visitors each year. Hiking the mountain is said to be strenuous but worth it.
