7 Things to Avoid Installing Above Your Septic System or Cesspool

August 2, 2016

iStock_000001809185XLargeYour septic system is often overlooked for many reasons. When it’s working properly, you have no reason to think about it. Just shower, brush your teeth and go about your merry way. It’s also buried underground, out of sight and out of mind. Because it is silently working away, you might forget about your septic tank when making decisions around your home. However, your wastewater facilities need to be considered when making decisions that involve heavy outdoor items. These are some of the top things we see that end up causing damage or being damaged due to their position near the septic system or cesspool.

  • Swimming pools
  • Sheds
  • Swing sets and Trampolines
  • Large rocks
  • Patios and Decks
  • Any large additions to the home
  • Sprinkler system – If we ever had to dig to reach your cover, the sprinkler lines could be damaged. Towns have different regulations about the distance a sprinkler line can be from a septic tank.

Just Grass
Basically, you need to keep anything that is heavy, stationary and cannot be moved easily away from your septic system. The weight can crush your pipes and tank especially after a hard rain when the ground is soft and unstable. Grass is really the only thing you should have above your septic system or cesspool, and even then, you must keep it mowed. Weeds can develop deep, strong roots that disrupt pipes beneath the ground. If you are thinking about building an addition or want to include any of the above items around your home, we would be happy to help you determine the best location to place them. Don’t risk expensive damage to your system by overlooking it. Contact Us or Request Service Now.
